Macán Clásico is a wine deeply rooted in its terroir, in the Rioja Sonserrana region, nestled in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, where centuries of winemaking tradition, knowledge, and culture have flourished. It expresses the freshness, fruitiness, vibrancy, and delicacy of the land, adding depth and complexity.

Behind this wine lies, since 2004, an intensive process of selecting, acquiring, and nurturing 100 hectares of vineyards, and, since 2009 (the first vintage released), commendable work in the winery. Furthermore, since 2016, the joint project between Tempos Vega Sicilia and the Baron Edmond de Rothschild Wine Company within the Rioja DOCa has boasted state-of-the-art facilities where innovation, technology, and winemaking converge.

Macán Clásico is a single-varietal wine, 100% Tempranillo. Its grapes come from plots with calcareous soils and a clay-sand profile. This vintage, warmer throughout the vine's growing cycle, led us to anticipate high concentration and power, which it certainly delivered. However, thanks to the 80 liters of rainfall in September, the skins radically changed their texture, transforming from dry to firm yet elegant. This vintage yielded very gentle extractions, almost infusions; nature provided everything. During aging, we also reduced the impact of American oak and favored toasting techniques that contribute to greater freshness.

Macán Clásico 2019 offers a more concentrated, powerful expression, but at the same time with that cheerful and fresh touch of our soils.

2019 Vineyard Cycle

2019 was a dry year. The water deficit in May, June, and July affected the vineyard's performance, compounded by slightly above-average temperatures, even in autumn and winter. In fact, it can be considered the warmest year of the decade, with days of higher-than-normal temperatures and a heat wave in late June and early July that brought unusually high temperatures above 40°C.

The entire ripening phase was affected by the drought, resulting in very little berry development. However, the 80 liters of rain that fell during the first half of September helped to meet the vines' water needs, and the fruit began to swell rapidly.

Finally, the weather cooperated for the grape harvest, and the picking took place throughout the region with mild temperatures, little thermal contrast, and no fog or precipitation that could have jeopardized production.
